Domestic Long-Haired

Domestic Long-Haired token

The Domestic Longhaired, as well as the Shorthair variation, is a breed that mixes several others and presents itself in the most diverse shapes and sizes, having as a common aspect the semi-long and fluffy coat. The breed is also widely known as Household Pet, the name most used by feline associations, or House Cat Longhair. There are also Household Pet cats with intermediate fur to Longhair and Shorthair.

One Domestic Longhaired can behave very differently from other dogs of the same breed, but he usually likes to play as a puppy and has a friendly temperament, being a good option for people who have never had a cat before. Some specimens may be better suited to the presence of children and other pets.

Source

The cat of this breed comes from a long mix of ancestors and other feline breeds, that is, the Domestic Longhaired is not a pure breed, which is why it has so much physical and behavioral variety from one specimen to another. In the United States the first cats arrived together with pilgrims, some of them were used to develop pure breeds and considered national inheritances like American Shorthair, while another part started to breed randomly with breeds that came from outside the country. The mix of breeds is incredibly old, existing since the time of ancient Egypt, when cats were worshiped.

As the Domestic Longhaired semi-long coat is given by a recessive gene, it is possible to use a specimen of this breed to obtain the Domestic Shorthaired variation and vice versa. The feline association TICA, like some others that recognize the Domestic Longhaired breed, recognizes the breed within the Household Pet group - composed of a mixture of breeds, cats with a "medium" pedigree and unregistered breeds or breed cats that do not fit the standard.

Behavior

Determining the behavior of a Domestic Longhaired is almost impossible, since each specimen has its own mixture of characteristics. One fact is that in general they are all sociable and friendly, some being a little more timid and docile while others are clearly more active and outgoing. The same happens with other characteristics, some are quieter and others more vocal, others are quite independent while some are very loving and create a strong bond with humans. In general, cats are easy to handle.

THE domestic longhaired cat it is usually quite playful as a puppy and some dogs get along well with children and other pets. Most cats of this breed adapt to domestic life, but some dogs may never get used to living indoors. The environment in which Domestic Longhaired is created also influences its behavior. Some of these cats can find competitions very stressful, if this is the case the ideal is to leave you at home, where you feel safe and comfortable.

Aspect

It is a proportional feline, with solid body structure and well-fed appearance, varying a lot in terms of body type and facial expression. The head is proportional to the body, with smooth contours, its expression must be content and its appearance healthy. The eyes are expressive, having vivid colors, which may or may not be harmonious with the color of the coat. The size of the ears is proportional to that of the head.

Its fur is semi-long, full and fluffy, presenting itself in the most varied colors and color combinations, in addition to the different patterns - tabby, for example. The white color is accepted in any proportion. There is also a short coat variation and some House Cat cats may have coat between the two variations. All types and lengths of tail are accepted in the House Cat Longhair breed. There is a special pattern made by TICA for House Cat puppies (dogs less than 8 months old).

Specific care

Because it has a semi-long coat, the ideal is for the House Cat Longhair cat to be brushed weekly, removing dead hair, keeping the cat's silky and healthy appearance, free of knots. This care also helps to reduce the incidence of tricobenzoares, a common problem in cats with longer hair. The fact that the breed is obtained from a large mixture of cats does not exempt visits to the veterinarian, vaccination and all care for domestic cats.

Health

The story of several cats House Cat Longhair may not be as happy as pedigree cats, so small problems that are not accepted in other breeds are accepted in this and should not be penalized. Because House Cat is from a mix of breeds, it is usually healthy and without specific genetic problems, however multiple unattended crossbreeding can lead to minor anomalies.
