5 Heroic Dog Breeds That Were Powerful Enough to Make a Difference

Dr. Mark is a veterinarian. He has been working with dogs for more than 40 years.

All dogs are loyal, all dogs are faithful, and a lot of us are lucky enough to have heroic dogs, too. If my dog wanders away from me during one of our strolls on the beach, all it takes is a cry for help and she comes running to save me. I think she is a real hero, but there are a few breeds that often find themselves in heroic situations.

What makes a dog a hero? A willingness to sacrifice his life to save the humans he lives with, or sometimes to even save those he does not know. Here are the five breeds most often cited for performing heroic acts.

5 Famously Heroic Dog Breeds

  1. German Shepherd
  2. Collie
  3. Newfoundland
  4. Golden Retriever
  5. Labrador Retriever

1. The Intelligent German Shepherd Dog

All of these breeds have been heroes, over and over. Some of them are listed among the most faithful dogs, and some of them are among the most loyal. This breed actually makes it in both lists, and many of his actions make him a hero.

Part of the reason that he makes all of the lists is that the GSD is one of the most common dog breeds. That is not all there is to it, however. GSDs are one of the most popular dog breeds, year after year, because of their faithfulness, loyalty, and their ability to perform heroic acts.

They have an impressive list of heroism. There are way too many stories to even tell, but a recent story (2013) from Argentina caught my eye. A GSD barked to attract help from the people in the house and then jumped into a pool and saved a four-year-old girl that had fallen in.

That is heroism. German Shepherd Dogs live about 10 or 11 years if healthy, and for all their acts of heroism, they deserve good care.

2. The Heroic Collie

Everyone remembers Lassie and naturally assumes that the Collie is going to make the list of the most heroic dog breed. This great dog breed does not make the list just based on a TV show, however.

Back in the early 1950s, a large dog food manufacturer started awarding a “dog hero of the year”. The award was given to courageous dogs that saved lives and property, and the Collie has won more often than any other breed of dog.

The award first honored Tang, a Collie who saved several children from being hit by cars. My favorite, however, is Duke, a dog that faced that thing that dogs fear most, fire. The 10-year-old child in his household was burning trash when the wind blew and her skirt caught on fire. The girl ran to the house, making the fire worse, but the dog grabbed the skirt, ripped it off, and in the process saved her from being burned or killed. Duke was burned in the mouth, but he was a real hero.

3. The Water-Loving Newfoundland

If all heroic activities took place in water, this breed would definitely be the most famous. Newfoundlands are well known for their ability to jump in a lake or river, withstand the cold, and use their webbed feet to swim strongly and save the human that needs help.

Many families have chosen Newfoundlands because they are willing to watch after and save any kids that get into trouble. One of the best-known stories about a Newfoundland, though, is from the sinking of the Titanic.

Several dogs were on that ship on her maiden voyage back in 1912. One, a Newfie named Rigel, was locked in the kennels with twelve other dogs when the ship hit the iceberg. A few of the small dogs were saved in lifeboats but since there were not enough for everyone, the big dogs were left on the ship to die.

The Newfoundland swam around in the cold water and eventually stayed close to one of the lifeboats. There was not enough space to haul him into the boat, and the freezing passengers of the lifeboat assumed the dog would not be able to withstand the cold.

A few hours after the Titanic sunk, the ship Carpathia began saving the survivors. Since it was still dark, the sailors aboard the Carpathia could not see what they were doing and were heading straight for the lifeboat. It was going to be struck and sunk, and the people aboard were too cold and weak to alert the ship.

The swimming dog was not too weak. He started barking and the Carpathia stopped before striking the lifeboat. They were able to follow the dog´s barking, save the survivors, and of course haul the dog up into the rescue ship. A crewman from the Carpathia adopted the dog, the hero of the Titanic.

4. The Brave and Loyal Golden Retriever

Like all of the hero dog breeds, there is almost too much to choose from when discussing the amazing Golden Retriever. A simple web search will reveal hundreds of stories that I could not include here.

My favorite Golden story is a simple one from England. A young woman was attacked by a gang and only her Golden saved her life.

The dog, normally gentle and quiet, was being walked by her owner when she was attacked. The dog realized something was wrong, reacted, and bit one of the gang members on the thigh, scaring off the others before giving chase. When she was able to leave the hospital, the woman reported that the Golden never left her side. She is pampering the hero too, of course.

Golden Retriever Braves Fire

5. The Faithful Labrador Retriever

There are a lot of other great dog breeds that are heroic. The St. Bernard was a heroic dog that served in the mountains and saved numerous travelers. Australian Cattle Dogs and Border Collies are energetic, intelligent, and there are several great hero stories about those breeds.

In fact, probably the only dogs that are not heroic are the small dogs that are usually not big enough to act as heroes. They might want to, they just can´t because of their physical limitations. A 10 pound Maltese cannot break down the door when there is a fire, and a 5 pound Chihuahua cannot guard the family, no matter how much he barks.

One big dog that is able to fulfill the role of hero is the Labrador Retriever. There are almost as many good stories about Labs as Goldens; my favorite is the story about the dogs in Wisconsin that saved their owner after a terrible automobile crash.

The owner usually locked her dogs up in the back but for some reason, she decided to leave them free inside her SUV. When she crashed, her skull was fractured and she lost consciousness—the dogs were not hurt.

One of the dogs stayed with her while two others ran for help. They barked and scratched to attract attention, but when the farmer came out on his porch and did not hurry to help, one of the dogs grabbed his sleeve and pulled him far enough down the driveway so that he could see the wreck.

He called for help. The rescue team later said that it was only the efforts of the dogs that saved the woman´s life. Her dogs were inducted into the Hall of Dog Hero Fame in Wisconsin. They were real heroes, like a lot of Labs.

How to Select Your Best Friend

When choosing a dog, there are a lot of things to look for. You can choose a dog because you like his looks, because you like his energy and intelligence, or even because you like the color of his eyes.

If you are looking for a dog, be sure to check your local animal shelter before searching further. If you want a special breed and they don’t have what you are looking for, check the website petfinder.com.

If you only want a puppy, visit a dog show and talk with some breeders. DO NOT buy your puppy from a pet shop or some backyard breeder that will not even show you the pup´s mother. You will be encouraging the type of irresponsible breeders that keep dogs locked up in “puppy mills”.

Whatever you are looking for, good luck. Who knows? Maybe your next dog will be the hero you were searching for.

Great Hub. These dogs are all great. There are so many dogs that are heroes in their own right.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on September 02, 2014:

Thanks for reading and following, misterhollywood! I appreciate your comment.

John Hollywood from Hollywood, CA on September 02, 2014:

Very informative hub and I loved all of the information you gave about heroic dogs. The pictures are adorable by the way.

Judy Specht from California on August 20, 2014:

Dogs are amazing. Interesting read

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on July 21, 2014:

I agree the actions of the Newfie, again and again, make that dog very likable!

Mona Sabalones Gonzalez from Philippines on July 21, 2014:

I love dogs. All dogs are heroes because they love their people, and so they save them emotionally. But these dogs you mentioned are pretty spectacular. I like the Newfoundland.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on July 21, 2014:

That sounds pretty heroic to me, Bob. The first Collie that was awarded the "Dog Hero of the Year" award, back in 1954, saved a little girl who had climbed into the back of a milk truck. The dog sat at the back of the truck, barking, and did not move until the driver came around and found the child among the crates. He did not risk his life, but he still saved the little girl from being buried under more crates, and probably saved her life.

Lucy sounds pretty amazing! That is definitely a story that the family would remember.

Bob Bamberg on July 21, 2014:

Another good read, Doc! Back in the early 60's my brother had a German Shepherd named Lucy, a family pet who performed a life-saving act. I don't think it qualifies as heroic since she didn't risk her life, maybe it would come under faithfulness.

My nephew Kurt was a toddler who got out of his outdoor playpen one day and wandered down their 300 ft. driveway. When he was about 10 feet from the road, Lucy knocked him over and laid on top of him, barking to get my sister-in-law's attention.

Lucy had never received any type of training nor was ever given any responsibilities. That was over 50 years ago, and the family still marvels at Lucy's wisdom. Voted up, useful and interesting.

Suhail Zubaid aka Clark Kent from Mississauga, ON on July 20, 2014:

Hahaha K2 yes, but his heroics don't even come close to those of Rin Tin Tin.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on July 20, 2014:

Suhail, I read a book about that amazing dog many years ago. I am surprised you did not vote for K2 though. He sounds as heroic as my dog, who thankfully has never had to save me from a burning building or an attack.

Thanks for sharing. I hope you all have lots of nice hikes this summer.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on July 20, 2014:

Thanks Pam, you are so fortunate to have that wonderful dog. Newfies do not do well here in the tropics, but I bet he loves Alberta!

Suhail Zubaid aka Clark Kent from Mississauga, ON on July 20, 2014:

A creative piece and great stories indeed!

Rin Tin Tin (the original one) and Lee Duncan who saved him are all time heroes. Rin Tin Tin became the highest earning movie hero of his time after he was saved by Duncan on the battlefield where he was born. His acting captivated millions during the movies silent era.

I also liked the way you ended the article by discouraging readers from buying puppies from pet shops and backyard breeders.

I am sharing it with my friends.

howtopam from Alberta, Canada on July 20, 2014:

Hi DrMark;

Great Information!

I love the story about the titanic. My Newfie Collie cross does have webbed paws and has never been exposed to a lager body of water where he might display his swimming abilities, but I have noticed that he does not seem to appreciate it when I spray him with the water hose.

Thanks for posting this hub.

I will not give the answer as to who you are, you must be kept guessing.

On this very page you were called names by another person when you wrote under your own name. You did not have the guts to reply to the accusations, that shows your calibre.

BTW you are misinformed about Karry's papers, don't worry about, the way you talk you have better dogs?

If you have anything against Guruprasad, you should not be taking it out on Eros or Nithi.
You are suffering due to the mistakes you made and you have not learnt from them, you continue to make more blunders making new enemies. You so insignificant.

This dog Eros produced many animals with soft ear faults as well as serious HD cases.
The owner showing only 5%of his progeny which is eligible to enter in the ring.
Its clear that their intention is to import some faulty dogs at discounted prices and make money by giving them to dumb peoples for stud.
The breeders of India not needed any HD, ED clarifying certificates, the only thing on which they count is the Tag of "IMPORT" on the dog.

In this dogs comments you may found many ass lickers of the owner who always speaking about the winning of this dogs progeny.
They really not aware of what they serving to other breeders and country and what will be its effect on future breeding?

Have U gone nuts. you want to breed a dog who is HD just because he produced some good dogs. People like U should not be allowed to breed even when u cannot consider about the prosperity of the breed. I pity on you thinking and breeding standards. I guess the term (PUPPY mills) have evolved from people like you only. Please Spare India cos few literally do hard work to being up breeding and bringing in some god dogs to India so let people use some good specimen to produce some standard quality rather then introducing a nightmare fort he breed and breeder himself.

Yeh and coming back to my comment "SG will produce only SG" now here is what I mean, they progeny and the male himself don’t have that elegance and attitude to stand the open class lineup. And just to update my knowledge where Eros was awarded a SG in the seiger show or some specialty, and what class was that an open class SG or youth or young, and why is he not shown in the seiger show if he is the best to come to India, cos what i know abt Indian scene is that all the best who have been in India have either been the seiger at least in top 5.

And talking about the progeny i agree Margrit gave a good SG placing and i was witness for that and totally agree to the standing in the class but what was the reason behind that, awesome progeny or better performance? if u can have a close look at the picture or video from the seiger show Pls recheck, the SG 2 lost because of the weather conditions as was new to India and such a climate but very good other wise for that class.

So Mr. who so ever needed explanation for my words here they are elegance is what is required to stand that lineup and that is what it is like father like son. I don’t think the progeny have any future after SG class for the open, cos when Open Indian progeny like Kimon or Timo who are one the best Indian GSD have to fight high for their placing then god bless EROS progeny.

I am new to the Indian GSD scene after having lots of exposure to English and German GSD game.

I have seen lots of dogs personally and have good friends abroad who have always guided me to understand this breed to the best I could.

Here I see the discussion on a dog which is motivated by some very personal grudges.

I have done some reasonable research on the two dogs in subject and I guess there are a few dogs that should never be compared to with the others as they may be exceptional to some extent for the country u are living in.

I have seen Quando in Germany and happen to see quite a few very good dogs from him in Germany and India as well. But to compare that dog to some other mediocre quality is not a point of such a long discussion. I happen to see the progeny of Eros also in the seiger show, good movers, flashy movers, but then what after that. A GSD is not just a good mover, he should represent the over all elegance and standard for what they are meant for. Like father like son, this is the case with both the dogs (Quando and Eros). One became 3 times dog of the year and hence forth the progeny also became Seiger and in female we have some very outstanding females from the sire. also the grand progeny is very good to show and compete with and i guess every one will agree to that, but on the contrary the other dog is a SG and hence the progeny will always be SG and I don’t see any chance of them to move up in the open class cos the type and quality needed for the open class is very well put forward i the seiger show this yr.

Show results will be published shortly

Adding to the list of success of Eros Progeny will be listed shortly once they complete their title.

Just going into the list of achievements of Eros Progeny will clearly show that there is no need nor necessity for any explanation about its qualitative produce.
If an eminent Judge - SV. Margret Dawson who IS COMING FROM THE LAND OF GSD Origins and who has produced many VA's and C.V.Sudarshan - do you think that they can be taken for granted in their selection.

Assuming even for a moment your allegations that its progeny's have poor anatomy, weak hinds, ugly lay of croup, donkey earset, poor attitude, poor temparament ,bad movement and poor pigment then how is it that Margret Dawson and C.V.Sudarshan could not find any of these while judging - THIS WILL CLEARLY SHOW YOUR STANDARD OF JUDGING - you got to go through a long way- even to be a critic you guys should have some stuff.
Guys I pity you - your comment reads" admit that it has got a decent head and strong bones - everyone can achieve that by correct feeding" - Is it some kind of thamasha- then pick up a dog from your own kennel if at all you have any kennel or dogs - just show that you can produce such puppies by just feeding them well.

FLICK VON ARLETT WHICH WAS NOT SHOWN NOR WON ANY TITLE IN GERMANY - BUT it has produced lot of winning progeny including VA. With regard to GSD's -producing is very important.

While looking into Eros progeny's both male and female they are coming up very well and winning, this is indeed a big achievement accomplished in just one and half years time.

For the past ten years you list out the top imports brought to India - no doubt they won shows but did they produce quality-elicit that .

How are humans different from other animals?

There are many similarities between humans and other animals that you may have noticed. Humans and animals both eat, sleep, think, and communicate. We are also similar in a lot of the ways our bodies work. But we also have a lot of differences. Are there any differences that set humans apart, uniquely, from all other animals?

Some people think that the main differences between humans other animal species is our ability of complex reasoning, our use of complex language, our ability to solve difficult problems, and introspection (this means describing your own thoughts and feelings). Others also feel that the ability for creativity or the feeling of joy or sorrow is uniquely human. Humans have a highly developed brain that allows us to do many of these things. But are these things uniquely human? First, let’s get into the fuzzy part of that question.

A baboon is being given a mirror test. Image by Moshe Blank via Wikimedia Commons.

There are a lot of things that humans think are true about animals and animal behavior, but some of these ideas are problematic. Sometimes, when we do tests on animal behavior, we use tests that apply to animals like humans, and we expect animals to perform in a similar way if they have similar abilities. For example, the mirror test is used to see if animals have awareness of themselves as the image that they see in a mirror. If a mark is placed on the animal, they should show signs of knowing that the mark is on their body. Maybe they try to rub it off with their hands or, if they can’t use their limbs that way, they may move their body a bit to see the mark better. But what if an animal doesn't have the best vision? Do we just say that, because they can't perform the test in that way, they wouldn't pass? Expecting all other animals to perform similarly to humans on tests can be problematic. This makes learning about some parts of animal behavior difficult.

But, what we have learned is pretty exciting. As we keep learning more and more about animal behavior, we are continually surprised.

Gunnison's prairie dogs seem to have a fairly complex language. rather than just sounding a basic alarm call, researchers have found that their alarm calls can describe specific predator speed, color, shape, and size. So when is this communication complex enough for us to call it a language? Elephants have been found to communicate across miles of land through subsonic sound. And when researchers slow a hummingbird's chirp down, it seems the song may be as complex as a song from some other birds, though more studies need to be done to understand this. Do we view animal "language" as limited just because we have trouble understanding it?

This Caledonian crow is solving a water level problem. It adds small blocks into columns of water to raise the water level, allowing it access to food. The crow also had to realize that one column was too wide, so the limited blocks wouldn't raise the water enough. Image from video by Logan C, Jelbert S, Breen A, Gray R, Taylor A via Wikimedia Commons.

Caledonian crows can solve problems and build tools, and can solve multiple-step puzzles that require a plan. Are these examples of difficult problems? Where do we draw the line to say something is "difficult" enough, or that we've given an animal proper motivation to want to even solve one of these problems?

Gorillas and chimpanzees have painted pictures of birds, describing (through sign language ) that that is what they were trying to create. If they had a goal in mind and then made it, is that a sign that they had introspection? That they are describing their own thoughts? And that they are doing it by using their own creativity? Seems like it might be.

And animals do appear to feel joy and sorrow. There are videos out there showing a raven using a piece of plastic to sled down part of a snowy roof. The raven picks it up and slides down over and over again… they aren’t playing with another bird, they are enjoying sledding and having fun, perhaps feeling joy. And we continue to learn of more and more species that show sorrow, especially at the loss of members of their family or other loved ones. Animals that grieve include elephants, wolves, sea lions, magpies, and many more. A recent video of javelinas (peccaries that live in the American southwest) show that they mourn their dead. But we didn’t realize this, until it was captured by a field camera.

So maybe there isn’t that much that makes us uniquely human. Maybe we need to pay more attention to what animals are doing, and try to view the world through their eyes. And, perhaps our ability to consider animal's feelings and hope for the well-being of these other amazing creatures is our best, and most uniquely human ability.

These autonomous gadgets have come a long way since they were first released, and today, the best robot vacuums are equipped with numerous high-tech features, including everything from emptying their own dustbins to responding to voice commands and gestures.

When shopping for a robot vacuum, it’s important to set a budget for yourself, as their prices range pretty dramatically. How Do You Want to Impact the World?

To begin with, you need to reveal the way you want to help the world.

While reading this article, you may think that you want to help people.

Of course, it is a great goal but you should be more specific if you want to find a perfect career.

Just think about the ways you want to help others as it can help you to maintain your focus.

Laura Fortgang, Ted Talk’s author, claims that it is important to pay attention to who you become doing your job but not to what you are going to do.

It means that the impact you can do is more important than anything other.

You need to choose a career that will let you make the changes you want to make.

If you still cannot understand what changes you want to make ask yourself a question about what problem you want to solve and why it is important to you.

Once you answer these questions, you’ll be able to make your choice easier and faster.

Reaviling your reasons, you’ll be able to understand why it is important for you and what is your goal.

What Impact Do You Want to Make?

Usually, the impact we want to make is closely related to our past experience including our surroundings, relationships with others, challenges we’ve come through, and so on.

For example, people who have problems with drug addiction usually tend to help others to overcome their addictions.

Those who faced some injustice in their life will be promoting social justice and become activists for a variety of social issues.

Applying for a certain ethical career, you can make an impact in such areas as:

  • Physical health and disease prevention
  • Mental health and wellness
  • Poverty alleviation
  • Animal care and protection
  • Disaster relief
  • Security and protection
  • Education and rehabilitation
  • Protecting the planet’s natural resources
  • Promoting spiritual awareness
  • Bringing joy to others
  • Eradicating social injustice
  • Promoting positive global relationships.

In fact, most meaningful careers fall under one of the categories above but there are some other options as well.

If you are interested in one of these spheres, you may be able to find some great career options that may interest you.

As we’ve said before, you need to be specifically looking for a meaningful career and think of the concerns that inspire your working and helping others.

After making a choice, you can start working on your resume and consider such options as charity and volunteering if you need more experience.

Social-Impact Careers’ Myths

If you are interested in a social-impact career but not sure whether you suit this job, this part of our article is for you.

Many people think that usually these careers are chosen by some free-spirited hippies or do-gooders who have lots of money.

Nevertheless, most of these images are no more than myths so we’ve decided to clear up some of the most widespread myths about these careers.

A Degree Is Required

As it was said before, most people thinking of meaningful careers think about doctors, nurses, teachers, and so on.

All of these career options require a degree however there are lots of meaningful careers that can be enrolled in without a degree.

The most important thing you need to start working in this sphere is a set of soft skills.

Salaries Are Low

Like any other career field, the social impact sphere provides low-paid and well-paid job options.

Considering a significant number of volunteers in this sphere, most people tend to think that it is impossible to have a good income working in this sphere.

Nevertheless, there is plenty of career options that can provide you with a good income.

Only Do-Gooders Fit These Jobs

It may sound quite ironic, but lots of people think that they don’t have some qualities and morality required for this type of career.

However, the point is that your career should be aligned with your moral principles and everything else doesn’t matter.

For example, you can eat meat and at the same time care about animals.

So, why cannot you work as a vet’s assistant or an ethical farmer?

At the same time, a vegan charity can be not a good option for you.

That is why you need to reveal the way you want to impact the world as it is the opportunity to find your perfect career option.

You’ll Burn Out After a Few Years

A social career is a challenging and stressful occupation and it may even lead to burnout but is it really inevitably?

JSTOR’s studies show that an altruistic and meaningful career doesn’t mean that you’ll be emotionally exhausted.

If you have enough support from your family and employer, it will help you feel less stressed out.

Also, such careers can be really rewarding as you are going to impact the world around you.

In other words, by doing your job you’ll be feeling satisfied that will let you reduce burnout significantly.

As you see most of these myths aren’t true and if they were putting you off, it’s time to reconsider your vision of meaningful careers.

Below, we’ve collected a list of 25 meaningful careers that will allow you to make an impact.

Just make sure to remember your goals and values while choosing your meaningful career option.
